This striking early self-portrait by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was painted in 1804, when the artist was just 24 years old and newly arrived in Rome. It provides a vivid glimpse into the Neoclassical mind and ambition of one of the 19th century’s most refined and disciplined painters.
Ingres presents himself in three-quarter view, turned slightly to the side yet meeting the viewer with a calm, direct gaze—serious, self-possessed, and full of youthful confidence. His right hand gently clutches his chest, perhaps symbolizing artistic integrity or inner conviction, while his left hand holds a piece of paper, likely referencing his identity as an academic painter.
This self-portrait marks a transition point—from an ambitious young artist in the classical tradition to a future icon of French academic painting.
